"Just
as I was asking the first question, I heard a man's voice coming
closer and closer to the stage, but I couldn't see him, "
said lead panelist DBJ publisher, Scott Coopwood. "The
next thing I knew this man walked two feet behind me and stopped
on stage left addressing the audience."
That person turned out to be Sherman Lee Dillon, who is running
for governor as a third party candidate.
"I
asked him several times to leave the stage and of course he
did not," said Coopwood. "I just knew at any moment
that he would be tackled by security, but that did not happen
for some time. I had to get up from my seat and go over to a
security officer and ask him to remove Mr. Dillon from the stage."
Dillon
was finally taken off of the stage by security. After the crowd
was settled and Coopwood was about to again ask the first question,
someone from the balcony in the performing arts center began
shouting ...Dillon for governor, Dillon for governor...
"Sir,
would you please sit down and be quiet," Coopwood yelled
to the man which rallied the audience into applause. The remainder
of the night was filled with several interruptions by applause,
and one more outburst from a member of the audience who was
also escorted out of the BPAC. As WABG was televising the debate
live, the Fox television network in New York heard about the
events of the evening and Fox news anchor, Britt Hume, closed
his Wednesday night national tv newscast showing a clip of the
debate and Coopwood. Fox news in Washington, D.C. also ran a
news clip of the debate.
