The Elliott -Nowell- White Science Symposium was founded by Dr. Robert Elliott, "I want to help perpetuate the legacy of Delta State as a school that helps the individual student grow personally as well as academically and professionally," Elliott said. "I want to be involved in a program to stimulate young minds, just as my mind was stimulated by teachers and administrators at Delta State who genuinely cared about me."

In addition to sponsoring the symposium, the Elliotts offer scholarships to Delta State upperclassmen maintaining a 3.5 GPA while majoring in the sciences. Those students along with other science majors have the opportunity to compete for a summer internship at the Elliot-Hailey-Head Mastology Research Institute. In all, twenty-two students have been named Elliott Scholars, fifteen Research Fellows.
