is Set for "Smokey"
Set to Run Oct. 2-5
|
The
Delta will soon enjoy some of the greatest rock-and-roll
classics ever written when Broadway's longest-running musical
revue, and the second musical in a row from Delta Center
Stage, opens in early October. Just released this year after
a 10 year run on Broadway, "Smokey Joe’s Café"
features 40 songs from the golden age of rock-and-roll,
including Treat Me Nice, Hound Dog, On Broadway, Fools Fall
in Love and Stand By Me. Described by the New York Times
as "Two hours of pure musical joy!" Smokey Joe's
Cafe features the hits of Elvis Presley, The Drifters, and
a host of rock legends from a simpler, more innocent time
in America, all from the songwriting duo of Jerry Lieber
and Mike Stoller. Please

Bologna
Performing Arts Center Announces Rigoletto Oct. 06 |
The
story takes place in Mantua during the 16th century. It
is a tale of riotous deception and the despair of revenge.
Rigoletto tells the tragic, gripping tale of a court jester
and his love for his daughter. The story is about a father’s
quest for revenge over the pitiless master who seduces his
beloved daughter then discards her, eventually getting away
with it. Rigoletto is showing at the Bologna Performing
Arts center at Delta State’s campus October 6, 2003.

Local
Juke Joint is Visited by
a Japanese Film Crew |
|
Last
Saturday Po Monkey’s Lounge in Merigold was filmed by a Japanese
film crew for a T.V. documentary. This documentary will feature
places from New Orleans to Memphis informing the Japanese public
about the “off the beaten path” areas of the United
States. Luther Brown, the director of the Delta Center for Culture
and Learning at Delta State University, helped compile a list for
the Japanese crew, who wanted to learn to cook soul food, film a
juke joint, and catch catfish on the Mississippi River. Po Monkey’s
is located in a shack which was built in the early 1900’s.
The atmosphere and the music are what make’s Po Monkey’s
Lounge an excellent illustration of our local culture. |
