The Delta Business Journal held its fourth annual Profiles In Leadership
Awards banquet Saturday night, May 3, at the Cleveland Country Club
during which three Deltans who have made significant contributions
to the region in their respective fields were honored.
Businessman Barthell Joseph, Jr. of Reed-Joseph in Greenville, Kenneth
Hood, farmer and agriculture leader of Hood Gin Company in Gunnison
and Dr. Lester Newman, President of Mississippi Valley State University
in Itta Bena, were presented awards by DBJ Publisher Scott Coopwood.
Edward Nixon, brother of former U.S. President Richard M. Nixon
and President of Nixon World Enterprises, Inc. in Seattle, WA was
the banquet's keynote speaker.
The event, which drew close to 300 attendees, was also attended
by Mississippi Governor Ronnie Musgrove who was on hand to issue
an official State proclamation honoring the evening's three awards
recipients. Musgrove, who made the declaration just prior to Nixon's
address, was generous in his praise for Joseph, Hood and Newman.

Twelve
years after his retirement as the first Dean of Arts and
Sciences at Delta State University, Dr. William LaForge's
memory still remains alive through the people who knew
him well. May 2, LaForge became forever immortalized in
Delta State's history with the rededication
of the Roberts~LaForge library in his honor.
Family,
friends, and former colleagues joined in the dedication
ceremonies.
"My father was blessed with a powerful mind, it was
balanced by humility, he had a childlike curiosity about
the things he didn't know, and his heart was filled with
unconditional love," said LaForge's daughter, Suzanne.
"He was a master in his field, but was not ashamed
of what he didn't know. When he taught, he breathed life
into the events of the past.He left you curious about
those events. I am proud that his seed grew in me and
that it grew in so many other people."
|
|
LaForge's
son Larry also shared some touching remarks. "I
can never fill my father's shoes, but everyday I try.
My father taught me that you're never quite excellent
enough and that you must always keep working at it,"
LaForge
began his career at Delta State in 1957 as a social
sciences and history professor.
In
1969, LaForge was promoted to become the first Dean
of Arts & Sciences. As an administrator, he was
known for being gentleman and a scholar.

Council's 68th annual meeting set for may 9th in Cleveland |
Delta
Council President Bryan Jones of Yazoo City announces that
the Delta Council Annual Meeting will be held on Friday,
May 9, 2003. The meeting will convene at 10:30 a.m. in the

Jones
said that the keynote speaker for the event will be Secretary
of the Treasury John Snow, who will be introduced by Senator
Thad Cochran.
"We
are pleased that Secretary Snow will address our 68th Annual

"It is a real honor to have one of President Bush's
top Cabinet officials as our guest in the Mississippi Delta.
As Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Snow works closely with
President Bush and our nation's top economic officials to
strengthen economic growth and create jobs."

to hear what his thoughts and policies are on the economy,"
added Jones.
In
addition to Secretary Snow's remarks, Delta Council will honor
all of the honor graduates from Delta high schools at a 9:30
