BUSINESSMAN'S
GENEROSITY ALLOWS DREAM TO TAKE OFF
After collecting donations from businesses, spaghetti dinners and
fish fries Delta State University student Lamar Buchanan can focus
on his education worry free of the costs. Nelson Wilson says he'll
pay for Buchanan to complete his Commercial Aviation
Degree at Delta State University.
|
"When
I was in the fourth grade, I used to talk about what it would be like
to be a pilot," recalls Buchanan. "I was inspired by my
love for speed and an enormous fascination with how something as big
and as heavy as a plane could fly. At that time, I had never seen
a black pilotand I was determined to be one."
Wilson
is the President and CEO of BMW's Prosthetics & Orthotics, LLC.
The company custom fabricates and fits prosthetic and orthotic rehabilitation
devices. He was touched by Buchanan's drive and spirit. "I was
impressed by how aggressive and knowledgeable he is, so I asked him
how much he needed to finish his flight training," Wilson said.
"At the time, BMW, LC, was in the process of buying a few corporate
planes." |

Delta State Commercial Aviation student Lamar Buchanan (second from
left) was awarded the first BMW, Inc. Flight Operations Scholarship,
which was established by Nelson Wilson (far right), President and
CEO of BMW, Inc. and his daughter, Dellanie, Executive Assistant.
The $25,000 scholarship will enable Lamar to complete his Flight Operations
degree according to Tommy Sledge (third from left), Chair, Commercial

Special Meeting of the Blues Highway Association
We will have a special meeting of The Blues Highway Association
on April 15th at 10am, in the Commissary of Hopson Plantation. Our
speaker will be Robert Stanton, who will discuss the concept of
Heritage Areas as
recognized by the National Park Service. This introduction will
help our group explore the possibility of pursuing a Capital of
the Blues National Heritage Area in the Mississippi Delta.
Robert
Stanton was the Director of The National Park Service for the Clinton
administration, and has good friends in both the Democratic and
the
Republican Party. He is the only African American to ever Direct
the Park Service. He is also the first Park Service Director to
be confirmed by Congress, and one of a handful who actually worked
their way up through the
ranks, starting as a temporary park ranger in 1962. Stanton is currently
Visiting Professor in the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental
Studies at Yale University. He is a specialist in Heritage Areas,
and a devoted fan
of the Blues.
