Cleveland Exchange Club celebrates 92 years

The Cleveland Exchange Club recently celebrated its 92nd birthday during a Noon luncheon at the Cleveland Country Club. President of the Cleveland Exchange, Michelle Fuquay, began the meeting by addressing members with a resolution that provided a brief history of the Club and some its highlights. There were many notable events and accomplishments; perhaps one of the most impressive facts was that 14 members of the Cleveland Exchange had a combined total of 516 years of service.

The members are: Nevin Sledge 57 years, Bill Alexander 55 years, Bill Eley 54 years, Hal Gerrard 40 years, Robert Johnston 39 years, Jack Fletcher 37 years, Jim Steen 35 years, Henry Outlaw 34 years, Dick Myers 33 years, Milton Bradley 33 years, Charles Newton 32 years, Mickey Thompson 24 years, George Campbell 22 years, and Mack Grimmet 21 years.

The Cleveland Exchange Club, which currently includes 66 members, provides a number of services for the community, many of which benefit children. One of the main of objectives of the Club is to prevent child abuse. In 2002 the Cleveland Exchange club officially adopted the "Blue Dog" as its mascot. The Blue Dog was originally used in a skit developed by Exchange member Wanda Ray and was so well liked it was adopted as the official mascot. Looking forward to National Agriculture Day

Contributed by the Cleveland/Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Delta Pine and Land

March 21 is National Agriculture Day. The agriculture industry works through an Ag Day organization (www.agday.org <http://www.agday.org>) to provide information for the media to encourage all Americans to learn more about the industry that provides our food and fiber. National Agriculture Day is recognized by the US Congress for celebration domestically but we want to extend that to our employees worldwide!

Agriculture has undergone dramatic changes since D&PL was formed in 1911. All of us are members of the agriculture industry and hopefully we all appreciate the role it has in the U.S., but it's always good to review a few general statistics. Here are some key points you may find of interest and that you may wish to pass along to some of your family and friends:

• Today's average farm is 417 acres compared to 147 acres in 1900.

• Today's farmer feeds more than 130 people in the United States and abroad. In 1960 that number was 25.8.

• 42 percent of U.S. total land area is farmland.

• U.S. farmers account for 42.7 percent of the world's soybean production and 34.4 percent of the world's corn production.

• Almost 90 percent of U.S. farms are operated by individuals or family corporations.

• More than 15 percent of the U.S. population is employed in farm or farm-related jobs.

• U.S. consumers spend roughly 9 percent of their income on food compared with 11 percent in the United Kingdom, 17 percent in Japan, 27 percent in South Africa and 53 percent in India.

• Farmers and ranchers provide food and habitat for 75 percent of the nation's wildlife.

When you look specifically at production improvements, you may find it of interest to note:

U.S. Farmers and ranchers produce meat that is lower in fat andcholesterol. The result is beef cuts that have 27 percent less fat than in 1985.

Biotechnology has resulted in better tasting fruits and vegetables that stay fresh longer and are naturally resistant to insects.

Plant breeding has resulted in crops better able to handle the environmental affects of drought and disease and insect infestations resulting in higher yields at harvest and lower costs to the consumer.
Governor Musgrove announces
new motorcycle manufacturing plant in Merigold

Governor Ronnie Musgrove, the Mississippi Development Authority, the Mid-Delta Empowerment Zone Alliance, the Cleveland/Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce and Bolivar County Board of Supervisors along with Knight Line Products, Inc., executives announced recently that the company plans to open an operation in the Bolivar County community of Merigold. The $1.3 million investment will create initially 85 quality jobs for local workers and upwards to 120 in the next three to five years. Knight Line Products, Inc., currently has fourteen employees.

"I am pleased today to be able to announce the creation of new jobs for the residents of the Delta. It is critical, particularly during a national recession, to focus on creating quality jobs for our citizens," Governor Musgrove said during his remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony. "When government and private enterprise work together to create jobs and invest in Mississippi's future, our citizens are the beneficiaries."

Governor Ronnie Musgrove and Don Knight, owner of Knight Line Products

Knight Line Products, Inc., produces motorcycles and all- terrain-vehicles (ATV's) in addition to maintaining a machine shop for industrial machine work. The company will import basic machines from Spain and the Orient. "Once the machines are located in the United States, we assemble the engines and frames which are customized. The end purchaser has a competitive, 'world-class' product at an affordable price," said Don Knight, owner, Knight Line Products, Inc.

The company will begin production of 800 units annually with plans to increase to 1500 units. The motorcycles and ATV's will be shipped within the United States as well as Canada, Mexico, England, Spain, France, and Germany.
