DRA funds to build Delta businesses

The Delta Regional Authority, headquartered in Clarksdale, has awarded a grant of $255,500 to Delta State University. These funds will support a two-year Business Retention and Expansion program in Bolivar, Coahoma, and Washington Counties. A press conference has been scheduled for March 19 at 1 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center on campus.

According to Dr. Brent D. Hales, Director of DSU's Center for Community Development, "The program will operate through The Center in collaboration with DSU's Small Business Development Center and the Industrial Development Foundations in Bolivar, Coahoma, and Washington Counties," says Hales.

Scott Luth, Executive Director, Cleveland/Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce said, "The purpose of this program is to help local chambers of commerce and industrial development foundations implement strategies that will reduce the number of jobs that are being lost in the tri-county area and to help create new jobs within existing private sector firms and in the public sector. We hope to mobilize teams of local leaders from the private and public sectors in each county so they will become more engaged in helping our local firms grow."

Tommy Hart, Director of the Industrial Foundation of Washington County said, "Through this effort we will mobilize local support from the private and public sectors in each of the three counties so that existing businesses and manufacturing firms will be able to respond more effectively to the demands being placed on them by the highly competitive global economy. We will seed technical assistance from a team of economic development experts who have had success with Business Retention and Expansion programs in other parts of the country."

Ron Hudson, Director of the Clarksdale/Coahoma Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Development Foundation said, "Most of the new jobs created in rural America are in existing firms. Thus, it makes sense that we give priority to doing all that we can to help firms that are already here and who love the Delta adjust to the new challenges that they face. When community organizations support existing businesses and manufacturing firms so they can prosper, new firms are likely to be attracted the community. This program will offer a new and practical opportunity for local leaders and citizens in each of the three counties to do all they can to support their major employers."

Dr. Hales stated, "Several graduate students in DSU's community development program will work in the program under the guidance of county leaders and Dr. Jerry Robinson, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Rural Sociology, who will serve as program leader."

The Brown Box opens inside Cleveland Commons

Formerly known as the Downtown Grocery, the eatery located inside the Cleveland Commons has recently come under the ownership of Cleveland native Desira Warrington. Along with this change, the establisment has been newly christened as The Brown Box, and many expansions have been made from the menu to gift items avaible for sale.

Warrington, who worked as a teacher prior to her new endeavor, says she was looking for a change in careers when the opportunity to run an eatery presented itself. "The Brown Box officially opened on March 1," says Warrington. However, Warrington adds that she spent a great deal of time learning and preparing for the business prior to that date. "Cosmetically we have changed a good bit," she says. "We have painted a lot and added a small bar table."

In addition, Warrington says there are new choices on the menu. "We have not removed anything from the menu, " she says, "but we have several new items including quiche, pasta salad, and numerous desserts." Warrington notes, with total modesty, that the coconut cake which she makes herself has gone over very well.

The Brown Box is open from 10a.m. - 3p.m. on weekdays. For more information or to place and order, call The Brown Box 843-0860.

Freedom Troupe to perform at Delta State

The play, called Five Feet Four Inches Forward, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Ewing Building's Delta Room on the Delta State University campus.
