The
three and half year old Cleveland-based advertising agency, Coopwood
Communications, won 38 ADDYs at the Mississippi Delta Advertising
Federation Awards ceremony held on Saturday, February 22, at The
Greenville Country Club. Coopwood also received the top awards
“Graphic Designer of the Year” and “Best of
Show - Broadcast”. This latter award was for tv commercials
the firm produced for Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville.
The annual awards ceremony recognizes excellence in advertising
and marketing work in the Delta region.
“We are extremely honored by this recognition,” says
Coopwood Communications owner and founder, Scott Coopwood. “Like
many other businesses here in the Delta, we too at Coopwood are
often faced with the challenge of businesses that think they must
look beyond our region for professional services. The awards our
firm received this week are proof that a Delta-based advertising
agency can produce outstanding work on the scale of a firm located
in Memphis, Jackson, Atlanta or just about anywhere else.”
Locally, Coopwood won Gold Addy Awards in the "Collateral
Material" category for the firm's design work for The Lunchroom
letterhead package. Designer, Sarah Benson won the top award "Graphic
Designer of the Year" for this work. In the same category,
Coopwood won an ADDY for Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce
Annual Report, and DSU's Recruitment Brochure. In the "Direct
Marketing" category, Coopwood won an award for Eley Engineering's
direct mail brochure and again for DSU's Recruitment Mailer and
Recruitment Campaign. Under the "Trade Publication"
category, Coopwood won an award for the Chamber's Tour Guide Ad.
In the "Consumer Magazine" category, Coopwood won an
award for the Chamber's Holiday Open House Ad. In the "Newspaper"
ad
design category, the firm won awards for their work DSU's Peavine
Awards, the Chamber's Ease On Down to The Delta ad, and The Warehouse
ad that ran in several publications. In the "Interactive
Media" section, Coopwood won an ADDY for the web site designed
for local artist Bill Lester. In the "Advertising for the
Arts" category, Coopwood won awards for DSU's Summer Arts
Brochure, and for DSU's Summer Arts Poster.
Founded in the Fall of 1999, Coopwood Communications is a full-service
advertising, marketing, and public relations firm representing
some of the Delta’s largest corporations. Last year, Coopwood
started a sister company, Cypress Web Design, that specializes
in web site design and hosting. Coopwood Communications is also
in the process of opening offices in Jackson and Oxford.
Coopwood Communications was created out of the Delta Business
Journal, also founded by Scott Coopwood. “When I started
the DBJ, I had no intention whatsoever in starting an advertising
agency,” says Coopwood. “After the first year of the
DBJ, we found ourselves writing copy and designing ads for many
of the advertisers in the publication," he continues, "from
redesigning and resizing those ads for other newspapers, to developing
those same ad concepts into brochures and then into marketing
plans, we soon realized that there was a need for a full-service
ad agency here in the Delta, thus Coopwood Communications was
created.”

| Tyler's
Big Star: Dedicated to hometown service

While
corporate America is quickly being over run with grocery superstores
that promise savings using cards and gimmicks, there are still those
grocery stores that stick to the fundamentals of competitive pricing,
quality products, and hometown service. Here in Bolivar County,
one such store is Tyler's Big Star located at 1013 Yale Street in
Cleveland.
Under
the ownership of Cleveland native Kip Tyler, Tyler's Big Star is
the only locally owned and operated grocery store in the Cleveland
area. "I purchased the store in 1993," says Tyler, who
has an extensive background in the retail food industry. "We
have many advantages over larger supermarkets," says Tyler.
"One such advantage is that Tyler's is a full service store
where the groceries are both bagged and carried to the customer's
car." As if this were not enough, Tyler says groceries can
be delivered to the customer's home for a modest fee of $5.00. It
is these "personal touches" that truly helps seperate
Tyler's from other stores.
While
Tyler is very pleased with being the only home owned and run grocery
provider in Cleveland, he is quick to point out that it takes a
team effort. "The employees make this store what it is,"
he says. Tyler says he has employees who have been with the store
over 20 years and are very experienced in their roles. "We
currently employ around 21 people both full and part time, and they
all contribute a great deal to make this store the best it can be,"
says Tyler.
In addition to its comfortable hometown feel, friendly staff, and
many services geared towards customer satisfaction, Tyler's Big
Star is probably best known for its meat department. "We have
had people drive from out of town to buy steaks," says Tyler.
Tyler also says the butcher will cut a selection any way the customer
wishes. "We can also get any type of seafood our patrons might
want," says Tyler. "We carry everything the larger stores
carry, plus many specialty items that no one else has," he
says. In addition Tyler says that if you take away the "gimmicks"
and compare the regular retail price of goods, Tyler's is more than
competitive.
Tyler's big Star is open Monday-Saturday from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm. |

Q &
A with new DSU Athletic Director Dr. Bradley Teague
|
|
The
Bolivar Bullet recently caught up with Delta State University alumnus
Dr. Bradley B. Teague, Associate Director of the Ole Miss Loyalty
Foundation. Teague was recently named the new Athletic Director
for Delta State University.
Teague
left Delta State in June 1996 to assume Assistant Athletic Director
duties at Ole Miss before moving to his current position as Associate
Director of the Ole Miss Loyalty Foundation in July 1998. Teague
holds both a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and a Masters
of Education degree in administration from DSU. He also earned his
Doctor of Philosophy degree in University Leadership from the University
of Mississippi in 2000.

Dr.
Bradley Teague |
Bolivar
Bullet: Dr. Teague, how do you feel about returning to
Delta State University?
Dr.
Teague: I am very excited to be returning to DSU;
it's a kind of homecoming. I actually met my wife at Delta State,
and we are both thrilled to be returning to Cleveland. I still have
many friends in Cleveland and could not be more honored and excited
about this opportunity.
Bolivar Bullet: What do you expect to bring to
the DSU Athletic Department upon your return?
Dr. Teague: My main priorities will be
total leadership and communication. Communication is essential to
the success of any program, and I want to hear the needs and concerns
of not only the Athletic Department, but DSU as a whole. I also
wish to make myself readily visible and accessible to all students
and personnel in the department. I am very impressed by the coaching
staff at Delta State and look forward to working with them and helping
to meet their needs. One Major portion of my new position is of
course fundraising, and I see many opportunities to provide both
students and coaches with more tools to aid in the success of the
DSU Athletic Department.
Bolivar
Bullet: Having been born and raised in Jackson, what is
your perception of the Delta?
Dr.
Teague: The Delta is a cultural center for South.
I have no reservations about returning to the Delta region, and
I am very honored by the opportunity to return to Cleveland and
Delta State University.
In closing Dr. Teague adds that he has plans to frequent Cleveland
in the upcoming weeks in preparation for his new position, which
is effective June 1. |
