New Runway and Terminal Open at Tunica Airport

TUNICA, Mississippi (Sept. 2, 2003) - Senator Trent Lott and other dignitaries gathered recently at Tunica Airport to officially open its new 5,500-foot runway and terminal building, giving visitors to “The South’s Casino Capital” access to the resort via corporate and regional jet aircraft.

Senator Lott, along with Senator Thad Cochran, was instrumental in securing federal funding for the Tunica Airport. “This airport and other infrastructure initiatives are so important,” stated Senator Lott. “Like any piece of transportation infrastructure, it can help Tunica County and the Delta diversify and grow its economy.”

Business Retention and Expansion (BR&E) project

The Business Retention and Expansion project recently funded by the Delta Regional Authority took a major step forward on August 22 as volunteers with the program met in Greenville to take action on implementing this major economic development effort. The $255,500 grant, which was awarded to Delta State University's Center for Community Development, involves Bolivar, Washington and Coahoma counties in a two-year Business Retention and Expansion program to help local and industrial development corporations in the three counties implement strategies that will reduce the number of job being lost in the tri-county area while also helping to create new jobs.

Volunteers met in Greenville on Aug. 22 to begin the process of setting up the Business Retention and Expansion project.
Volunteers at the organizational meeting went over details of the program which will set in motion an action phase of the program. The BR&E project will operate through the Center for Community Development in collaboration with Delta State's Small Business Development Center and the industrial foundations in Bolivar, Washington and Coahoma county.
