Clarksdale
blues and art store celebrates 1st anniversary during International
Blues Festival
|
Just
2 blocks from the Delta Blues Museum and 5 minutes
from the legendary blues "crossroads,"
Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art will host its
1st anniversary celebration from August 8 through
10.
"We'll
be featuring 3 days of 'live' blues, art exhibits
and more," said Roger Stolle, Cat Head's
co-owner. "We really just want to thank our
customers for a wonderful first year. We've had
so many great experiences." In addition to
the store's free events, Clarksdale will hold
its 16th annual free Sunflower River Blues &
Gospel Festival nearby on August 8 and 9, featuring
Floyd Taylor, Pinetop Perkins, Honeyboy Edwards,
CeDell Davis and others
(www.sunflowerfest.org).

Roger
and his wife Jennifer started the unusual music and art
store last year after moving from St. Louis, leaving their
old careers behind. "Roger wanted to give something
back to the art forms he loves so much, and I wanted a chance
to do my own thing," explained Jennifer, adding, "We
left lucrative marketing careers up north to follow our
hearts." Their hearts led them to Clarksdale, Mississippi
- America's blues crossroads. "As I said last year
when we were opening, I used to deal with corporate presidents
and travel the world. Now, I deal with cool artists and
amazing old blues guys. I get to travel the Delta in search
of good music and great art. It's like a dream come true."
While the business has yet to show a profit, it is paying
its own bills while Jennifer holds down the fort with her
new teaching career. "I'm getting emergency certified
as a teacher in a critical needs area, so at least we'll
have one steady paycheck this year," she said with
a laugh. "My getting to teach was part of the deal."
