The National Service-Learning Partnership selected
Cleveland, MS and Delta State University as one
of eight participating sites in the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation Youth Innovation Fund. The program
encourages young people to create innovative solutions
to important community problems.
"Youth possess the potential to have a crucial
influence on community development because of
our vitality, creativity and unique perspective,"
says Jeremy Chatman, a 16- year old member who
helped establish the project.
The Cleveland program receives $200,000 over two
years from the Kellogg Foundation, and will develop
a youth-led philanthropy board to investigate
local concerns, resources, power structures, service
learning, and youth philanthropy.

"This initiative has the potential to help youth and
adults rethink youth voice within the frameworks of high
quality service-learning projects and youth philanthropy,"
says Anna Long, Program Associate for Service Learning at
the Delta Center for Culture and Learning's Office of Student
and Community Engagement. She adds, "The project gives
the students an opportunity to facilitate social change
in the Mississippi Delta."

Depot Library open house |

Before |

After |
The Cleveland Depot Library, headquarters for the Bolivar
County Literacy Council, held its open house on July 24
at its recently constructed facility at 101 South Bayou
Avenue in Cleveland. The public was invited to tour the
facility and learn more about the 24 programs available
through the literacy council, from after-school tutoring
to GED preparation to computer courses.
The
Cleveland Depot Library is the only library in the state
devoted exclusively to literacy. Facility expansion from
1,500 square feet to 5,500 square feet was made possible
by grants administered through the Mississippi Library Commission
and the Delta Regional Authority, and funding from the City
of Cleveland and Friends of the Bolivar County Library System.

State's new and improved bookstore |
This
fall, Delta State students will see a new and improved
bookstore. Follett Higher Education Group bought the
bookstore. “Follett is prepared to spend up
to $200,000 to provide Delta State University with
a bookstore that attracts customers, inspires confidence,
and enhance academic image. This investment includes
customized flooring, paint, accent lighting, latest
design generation furniture, fixtures, equipment,
and computers. The investment and design plan will
be created for the existing Jimmy R. Williams Bookstore
featuring approximately 4,700 square feet of retail
space. Once the plans are approved by |
|
the University, the project will be completed no later
than twelve weeks following approval, assuming no
demolition is involved in the project. The objective
is to complete the design of the “new”
Jimmy R. Williams Bookstore prior to the November
1, 2003 Homecoming Weekend.” |

|
“As
a proud new member of the campus community, Follett
pledges to provide $1,000 annually in textbook scholarship
contributions. These scholarships will be awarded
by the Delta State University administration,”
a Follett press release stated. In an article published
in The Chronicle of Higher Education, educators reported
that Follett earned consistently high marks for customer
satisfaction, with 74 percent of respondents approving
its performance. The satisfaction rating for Barnes
& Nobles was 55 percent. “We were able to
achieve our high rating because we make our customers
the touchstone for every business decision. It’s
out job to provide convenience and value
|
at
every opportunity, whether that means integrating
online services into our merchandise mix or offering
educationally priced software to faculty and students.
We never forget that we exist because of our customers”,
a company spokesman said. |
