Cleveland's Open House set for Sunday, November 10th
Cleveland's annual Open House is set for this Sunday. The Open House provides members of the community the opportunity to interact with local business owners and allows customers a chance for some early Christmas shopping. The event, which was started around thirty years ago by former Cleveland business owner, Clemmie Collins, lives on stronger and better than ever today. As always, local merchants will provide patrons with a variety of treats and offer specials for the holiday event. It's time to get geared up, look for bargains, and mark a few items off of that Christmas list! The open house begins at 1:00pm on Sunday afternoon and lasts through 5:00 pm.

Bolivar County Sheriff's Office: technology in action
The Sheriff's Office in Bolivar County is home to one of the most up-to-date and state of the art dispatch systems in the state. Complete with four computers, hydraulic lifts, climate control capabilities, and foot-actuated pedals, nothing goes by unheard. The system in comprised of six incoming phone lines and three lines dedicated solely to 911. All incoming calls are recorded and the dispatcher can reach any officer or any department county or statewide with the click of a mouse. Rhonda Jenkins, one of the Bolivar County SO dispatchers, says that the system allows her to take incoming calls and maintain radio contact with officers all at the same time. "We even have a special feature to receive and respond to calls from members of the community who are hearing disabled or completely deaf," adds Jenkins. In addition, the SO also has a computer system set up for the NCIC, which stands for National Criminal Information Center. This system, which is monitored by the FBI, allows the Sheriff's Office to instantly pull records on any individual they may encounter.

Cleveland Heritage Commission, helping to preserve the Delta
In June, 1995, the Cleveland Board of Alderman adopted a local ordinance and established the Cleveland Heritage Commission, created to take an active role in preserving the rich history of Cleveland. Since its inception, the Commission has done a great deal to maintain and create an aesthetically pleasing and historically rich downtown area. The Commission works with both contributing properties (properties that have historical significance) and non-contributing properties (newer buildings in the area) to achieve a balance that helps preserve the overall quality of downtown Cleveland. Hilda Povall, chairman of the commission, says, "We try to work very hard with the people and businesses in the historic district to help in any way that we can." Povall also says the Commission has recently adopted a residential area including the streets of Pearman, Bolivar, Leflore, and Victoria.

Judge Albert B. Smith III

Circuit Court Judge Albert B. Smith III has roots that run deep in Bolivar County
Judge Al Smith III and his family have a long history that runs deep into the heart of Bolivar County. "My ancestors settled in Bolivar County around 1915," states Judge Smith. "My great uncle Walter was the Night Marshall for Bolivar County where he was shot and killed in the line of duty," he continues. "Another great uncle, John T. Smith, served as Superintendent of Education for Bolivar County." Smith says his grandfather worked in Washington DC for some time before returning to Bolivar County and working as an attorney.
Smith himself has ammassed quite a record of achievement. Serving as city prosecutor for four years, and now as Circuit Judge for the eleventh district since the year 2000, Judge Smith has contributed a great deal of time and energy to the Delta and Bolivar County. Among his many accomplishments, Judge Smith says, "My greatest achievement and challenge was raising my teenage daughter as a single father."
