Local artist begins new endeavor
Bill Lester, professor of art at Delta State University, has combined his artistic talents and his eye for detail to create duck and turkey calls that are as beautiful as they are functional. "I began making calls several years ago for myself and a few friends," says Lester. Today, having mastered the art, Lester is making truly original calls that will last a lifetime. The calls, which are made of acrylic with brass trim, are hand-turned and hand polished. In addition, each call is tuned on the banks of the Sunflower River. For more information on Bill Lester's duck and turkey calls, please contact him at the DSU Art Department (846-4720) or at his studio (756-2996).

Cleveland /Bolivar County Animal Shelter hosts Rabies Clinic
Sponsored by the Bolivar County Health Department, the 5th Annual Rabies Clinic is scheduled for November 2, at the Bolivar County Animal Shelter. The Rabies Clinic provides rabies vaccinations to your pets for only $5 and provides a 20% discount for multiple animals. Director of the Bolivar County Shelter, Sherri Norquist, says, "We began the clinic because of the need for affordable vaccinations to help prevent rabies, especially for multiple animal households." In Addition, Dr. Rich Weatherly, of the Animal Medical Clinic, volunteers his time to help vaccinate the animals, and all proceeds from the Clinic go to the Bolivar County Animal Shelter.

As always, there are plenty of potential "friends" to be made at the Shelter

Students participate in "Shack-A-Thon"
As part of the many events comprising the Delta State University's Homecoming Week, a "Shack-A-Thon" was held on the Quad. The event consisted of student organizations building cardboard "shacks" from readily available materials, and living in them for twenty-four hours. Student organizations were required to have at least one member present at all times throughout the duration of the event. Sponsored by the Delta State University SGA and the Bolivar County Habitat for Humanity, the "Shack-A-Thon" aimd to make residents aware of the homeless population in the Cleveland/Bolivar County area.

Cleveland Police Department set to present Halloween Carnival
For the first time ever, the Cleveland Police Department is sponsoring a Halloween Carnival this year. Mike McCain, Sergeant of the Special Operations Division, is overseeing the project. McCain says, "We hope to encourage parents not to put kids on the street, by providing a safe and fun environment." The Carnival will host a variety of games and events including a costume contest, a dunking booth, and a cake walk. Prizes will be offered for events, and numerous community organizations and citizens will donate their time. "It is a chance to get the community involved with the police department," says McCain. The Carnival will be held at the Expo Center and will last from 5:30pm-8:00pm on October 31st.
