Palestine & Israel: Monday, September 9th, 7:30pm at DSU
Residents of the Delta will have an opportunity to get a first hand report on the crisis in the Middle East from Dr. James W. Fleming, founder and Director of the Biblical Resources Study Center, Jerusalem, Israel. DSU Prof. Garry Jennings, Director of The Madison Center, notes that "Dr. Fleming has been working in the Middle East for well over three decades. His observations on the crisis will be a valuable education for the campus and regional communities." Dr. Fleming's talk is the first in The Madison Forum Series that will bring noted scholars and public officials to the campus during the academic year to speak on politics, law, and policy. It all starts at 7:30pm at the Delta Room in Ewing.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites to open
Set to open in the Spring of 2002, construction for the new Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites is well underway. With both the Comfort and Hampton Inns under his belt, owner Dinesh Chawla says he was ready to try another chain. The new facility is set to have a total of 66 rooms, 18 of which will be suites. Chawla says he entered the hotel industry 13 years ago, when he stepped in to help out his father. When asked about the complexities of running a hotel, Chawla says it is simple!"Focus on one guest at a time."

Cleveland welcomes
first urologist
Dr. Derek Miles, originally from Kansas City, Missouri, now calls Cleveland home. On July 29th, the Bolivar Urology Clinic opened its doors, and expanded health care for Bolivar County Residents. Dr. Miles received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Missouri in Kansas City, and acquired surgical training in St. Louis at Barnes Jewish Hospital. During his residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miles says he began considering opening a practice in the Delta. Having lived here only a short while, Dr. Miles says he enjoys life in Cleveland and is very enthusiastic about his practice. Dr. Miles' clinic is located at 907 E. Sunflower Road, suite 103 in the Physicians Fourplex next door to Bolivar Medical Center.

Gumbo Music finds
new home

Gumbo Music, formerly on North Chrisman Avenue, has settled into a new location at 101 5th Avenue, next door to Doublequick. Owner, Brian Ware, says the move provided the easygoing atmosphere he was looking for, and placed the shop in much closer proximity to Delta State. Ware, a musician himself, describes his shop as a specialty music store that features a diverse selection of hard-to-find albums and box sets. Ware also says a good portion of his business is dedicated to tracking down special orders for his customers. In addition, Gumbo Music offers a selection of independent music publications. Gumbo Music is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm.

Delta State receives funding for blues band
Through the recent restructuring of a grant from the Hearin Foundation, Delta State has been allotted funds to form the first ever Delta State blues band. Dr. Luther Brown, head of the Delta Center for Culture and Learning, says a major portion of the money will go to scholarships while the remainder will be used to purchase equipment and provide publicity. Barry Bays, a professional musician and instructor at Delta State, will act as the band coordinator. Brown says, "we want the band to have a flexible composition with the core comprised of students." In addition, Brown hopes to have local talent and members of the community sit in with the group. The band's first "gig" is scheduled for October.
