Shopping for the season

Downtown Cleveland

In the last few shopping days of the 2002 Christmas Season, local Cleveland merchants indicate that this should be a very strong year for holiday sales. "I've been very pleased so far," says Neysa Yeager, owner of Neysa's Fireside Shop. Neysa also indicates that she expects a great deal of last minute shoppers.

Both Wayne Britt, of Britt Jewelry, and Shelia Clark, of Clark jewelry, say crosses are a big seller this year. "We've also been selling a lot of white gold, colored stones, and pearl jewelry," adds Britt. Clark says, "Home accessories and things to entertain with have also done well."

In regards to clothing, Betsy Abraham of Abraham's says she is surprised by the number of big-ticket items that are selling (jackets and sport-coats). "We are also selling a lot of shirts and sweaters as well," she adds.

Sandy Huerta of the Warehouse says,"We have been very busy this past week. We have sold a lot of furniture as well as smaller "stocking stuffer" items." On January 10, the Warehouse will open their new art gallery that will feature Delta and regional artists.

With the Holiday season only days away, it appears Bolivar County residents are geared up in full force, and local merchants will have a happy holiday season as well.

DSU held 76th graduation
ceremony on December 14th

Delta State University presented the 76th graduating class Saturday December 14, 2002. Fourteen graduates accepted education specialist degrees, 118 received their masters, and 241 students accepted their baccalaureate degrees.

DSU president, David Potter praised the students for their achievement as did Commencement speaker Amy D. Whitten. In addition, Whitten offered the students four "life rules" and acknowledged the sacrifice of family and friends in their support of the graduates. Whitten also added, "Delta State's faculty and staff are the apex of others, Dr. Potter is a visionary compelled to maintain an excellent standard of service during tough times."

Traditionally, the two students with the highest grade point average receive the first diplomas. This year's first recipients were: Amy Denise Pierson, a Mathematics Education major from Batesville and James Tyler Hardy, a Business Management major from Canton both with a 4.0 grade point

A Gentleman Remembered

As their way to remember and pay tribute to a mentor and friend, two former partners of the late S. R. "Sonny" Blakeman of Cleveland spearheaded the establishment of a scholarship in his memory at Delta State University. Mike Brister and David Putnam, along with family members and the Cleveland Rotary Club have created the S. R. "Sonny" Blakeman Memorial Endowed Scholarship. "The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who exemplifies the high standards by which Sonny lived on a daily basis," says Mike Brister.

Blakeman founded an investment business out of his home in Cleveland, MS. in 1957. His home business eventually led to Blakeman, Brister, and Putman Financial Group located in Cleveland and Winonna, Mississippi. He and the former Mary James Clark were married for nearly fifty-five years. Their son, Randolph Blakeman and his wife, Elspeth, live in San Antonio, Texas.

For more information on how you can contribute to this or any other scholarship fund, contact Keith Fulcher, Director of Development at Delta State University, 662-846-4708 or email, kfulcher@deltastate.edu
