Nelson's Taxidermy in Cleveland |
"Things
are looking good this season," says Jim Nelson, owner
of Nelson's Taxidermy in Cleveland. "We've seen a number
of big deer so far this season, and I believe it could
be a record year." Nelson says the biggest deer that has
come in thus far scored a 171 on the Boone and Crocket,
and boasted a whopping 20" spread with a 6" base. Nelson,
who mounted his first deer in 1973, says there have been
a number of hogs killed lately, and reports that the biggest
he's seen weighed an estimated 400 lbs. "I thought it
was going to tear down my skinning rack," he laughs. Nelson
specializes in all types of mounts and has additional
capabilities to process meat. For more information on
his services, Nelson can be contacted at 843-2426 or you
can drop by to see his work at 107 Lee Street in Cleveland.

World
traveler settles down in Cleveland |

To
say that Dr. Macklyn W. Hubbell is culturally well-rounded
would indeed be an understatement. Hubbell, who
holds degrees in history and theology as well as
a Doctorate in Specialty Counseling, travels the
world to help missionaries and their families with
problems. To date, Hubbell has visited many parts
of South America, Africa, Singapore, New Zealand,
Australia, and has traveled extensively in Eastern
Europe (just to name a few of his trips). Hubbell's
association with Bolivar County began in 1962-80,
when he served as Senior Minister for the First
Baptist Church in Cleveland. In 1980 Hubbell moved
to New Orleans but eventually returnedto Cleveland
in 1998. In addition to his travels, Hubbell has
published nine books with titles such as Who
Me? Do What? Go Where? (about his missionary
work) and Food in the Fanbourgs (a compilation
of pieces on eateries in New Orleans). Hubbell also
features a weekly column in the Bolivar Commercial,
from which he hopes to compile another book in the
future.

Barry
Bays: Musician, professor, and author
Barry Bays is a
name that most people in the music world are more
than familiar with. Having studied music for the
majority of his life and taught at a collegiate
level for fifteen years, Bays can truly be called
a professional, and a well-known one at that.
Bays has toured
and recorded with some of the biggest names in
the business, such as Little Dave Thompson, John
Mohead, Patrick Weathers, and the Beat Daddys.
"I am also on Shawn Lane's Warner Brothers debut
album, his new live CD, and two of his videos,
" says Bays. Bays' music with Mohead has been
featured on many of the nation's top television
and radio stations and the daytime series "The
Young and the Restless". In addition, he
has also been featured on Mississippi Roads
twice and presented a Jazz Christmas special for
Mississippi Outdoors.
Bays, who has been teaching at DSU since 1988,
also offers private lessons in guitar, bass, mandolin,
banjo, basic piano, and songwriting.
Most recently, Bays
made highly significant contributions to the book
Reggae, Rastafari, and the Rhetoric of Social
Control, which he co-authored with Dr. Stephen
A. King and Renee Foster, both of DSU. "Rob Bowman
(a world-renowned ethnomusicologist) gave the
book very high praise...that made me feel great,"
says Bays. The book is available through both
Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com.
