DSU Police Department gets in the holiday spirit
Delta State University's Police force is displaying their holiday spirit. As a way to promote community involvement, the department is offering a deal to help settle campus traffic violations. Those testing the limits of the law are being offered a unique and beneficial way to resolve outstanding fines. The Feed the Families food drive allows traffic tickets to be paid with food items valued at half the price of the fine. Lynn Buford, Chief of the DSU police force says," Feed the Families is the perfect way to reduce your fine and help someone in need." For the rest of November, violations will be not only forgiven, but forgotten.

Cleveland Fire Department gains new tool to help protect citizens
The Cleveland Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) recently acquired a new 100-foot ladder truck, which is bigger and more impressive than its predecessor. "The truck was built to our specifications," says Cleveland Fire Inspector Gene Bishop. The new truck, which is made by Pierce in Appleton, Wisconsin, features a 500 Cummins engine, Allison Transmission, 100 ft hydraulically controlled ladder, and a hydraulic pump capable of pumping 2000 gallons per minute. The new pride of the CVFD weighs in at whopping 68,000 pounds, and sports a complimentary black and red paint job. "They call the color scheme "Chicago," because those are the colors they use up there," explains Bishop. The platform on the end of ladder is proudly marked with a DSU statesmen in a fire suit, ready for action. Bishop says, "We wanted something to help represent our community." With a new truck in its arsenal, citizens can rest easy knowing that the CVFD is on the job.

Cleveland home to emerging painter
To say that Trevor Simpson looks on the world from a different vantage point would indeed be an understatement. Originally from St. Clairsville, Ohio, Simpson is a senior painting major a Delta State University, where he serves as Vice President for Kappa Pi International Art Fraternity. With an uncanny eye for color and a fluid impressionistic style, Simpson has created his own niche. "I consider myself an abstract impressionistic expressionist," says Simpson. "I want my paintings to convey the mood of the painter at the moment they are painted," he adds. Simpson credits Delta State for helping him grow as an artist, and says that painting instructor, Duncan Beard, has helped him tremendously. Some of Simpson's work will be shown in the upcoming gallery opening of the Warehouse, and his thesis exhibit is set for May of 2003. After obtaining his Master's degree, Simpson aspires to teach at a collegiate level. For serious inquires about his work, Simpson can be reached at 662-402-7500.

Johnny Brister: on the mark
Johnny Brister is not your average Delta farmer, unless your average farmer doubles as a paramedic, and can fire eight rounds a second from a .38 super semi-automatic handgun and rarely miss the target. Brister, a Grandmaster marksman with the International Practical Shooters Confederation, is in the top 5% in the nation among handgun shooters. Brister holds four Mississippi state championships, both Arkansas and Alabama three-gun state championships, and has competed twice in national competitions coming in seventh both times. "Bill Thompson, of Bill's Custom Automatics, started me shooting a number of years ago," recalls Brister. "I was not that good at first, but I didn't like getting beat," He admits. Brister, who calls competition shooting his "hobby," says it is a great past time, and can be both a rewarding and challenging endeavor.
