Elliott-Nowell-White
Science Symposium to be held October 24th
and 25th at DSU
This
year's Elliott-Nowell-White Science Symposium,
an event sponsored by Drs. Robert and Mary
C. Elliott, will host a variety of medical
professionals discussing everything from lung
transplants to the West Nile Virus in animals.
The Symposium, a two-day seminar, was established
over ten years ago by the Elliotts to enlighten
students, faculty, and members of the community
about research ideas and cutting-edge innovations
in science and medicine. Featured speakers
at this year's symposium will be Michael J.
Edwards, Dr. Martin L. Dalton, Dr. Phillip
Gorden, and Dr. Lanny W. Pace. The Symposium
will begin on Thursday evening with a discussion
by Dr. Dalton regarding breakthroughs in the
field of lung transplants. For more information

Dr.
Tom Wiggins: a true collector
Dr. Tom Wiggins, a local dentist, is well known for
keeping his patient's smiles looking and feeling their
best. However, something people may not know
is that Dr. Wiggins is also an avid collector of autographed
photos.
"I began my collection around fourteen years
ago," says Dr. Wiggins. "I started to collect
photos of people who were significant to me when I
was growing up." To date, Dr. Wiggins has amassed
a truly impressive collection of photos and signatures
including Marlin Brando, Jane Mansfield, Audrey Hepburn,
Johnny Carson, John Belushi, John Lennon, Sir Edward
Hillary, and Jacqueline Kennedy, just to name a few.
"
The most important fact about collecting autographed
photos is doing your research to make sure the signatures
are not forgeries," says Dr. Wiggins. In addition,
he explains that a photo simply autographed with the
famous person's name is worth far more than if it
is addressed to a particular recipient. Dr. Wiggins
says his favorite piece in the collection is an autographed
photo of John Lennon complete with "mojo"
signature.

| Winterville Mounds Branch Director and Curator, a resident of Cleveland
Eleanor Schnabel, Branch Director of Winterville Mounds, became
a resident of Cleveland in June of this year. Originally from
the region, Schnabel moved north at the age of eight, and has
lived in several locations around the globe including Bath,
England and Honolulu, Hawaii. Schnabel’s family once owned
and farmed the area around Perthshire just north of Rosedale,
and her mother was the famous painter, Emma Knowlton Lyttle.
In August of 2000 Schnabel moved back to the region to work
for the Winterville Mounds, which is administered by the Mississippi
Department of Archives and History. Schnabel says “moving
back to the Delta felt like coming home.” For more information
on Winterville Mounds, a site of great historical significance,

| Dorgan family presents $1 million gift to Delta State University
The Dorgan family, owners of the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation
Biloxi/Gulfport, recently presented Delta State University with
a $1 million gift. Billy Dorgan Sr. says, "We want to help
make available to all students the very best education, and
we think that is at Delta State University." Billy Dorgan,
Jr. is a 2002 graduate from DSU with a degree in business management
and was the Delta State football team's starting kicker from
1999-2000. He holds the record for point after touchdowns in
a season with 71 (2000). The Dorgan's generosity will go to
fund a new athletic complex. "The facility is designed
to meet student needs both academically and athletically to
make them competitive on the field and in the classroom,"
Dorgan Sr. says.
