Brinkley to present lecture and book signing October
14th at BPAC
Historian and author Douglas Brinkley will present
a lecture in honor of the new National Geographic
book he co-authored with famed historian and National
Geographic Explorer-in-residence, Stephen Ambrose.
The book, entitled The Mississippi and the Making
of a Nation: From the Louisiana Purchase to Today,
was written to commemorate the bicentennial of the
Louisiana Purchase. The book explores not only the
River as it is today, but the many historically significant
events that have taken place along its banks. Douglas
Brinkley, director of the Eisenhower Center for American
Studies at the University of New Orleans, has written
or edited a number of books, including a biography
of Rosa Parks, a study of Jimmy Carter after his presidency,
and The American Heritage History of the United States.
Brinkley's lecture/book signing will take place on
October 14th at the BPAC, 7:30pm.

| Bill's Custom Automatics
remains a staple of Bolivar County
Bill's Custom Automatics located in Shelby, has been the premiere
location for custom firearms for over 10 years. Owner Bill Thompson,
who moved to Shelby from Alaska in 1992, has dedicated the majority
of his life to repairing and customizing firearms of every kind.
From his time spent with the Forest Rangers in Idaho, to his
position with the Anchorage Police Department for 15 years,
Thompson is well versed in the art of gunsmithing. While Thompson
says he works on guns of all shapes and sizes, he admits his
true passion is customizing 1911 45's. "Most gunsmiths
specialize as they go along in some area and my area of specialization
is customizing .45's for competition shooting. But I still build
rifles and work on just about anything else," Thompson
says.
