Lock and Dam project update
The Montgomery Point Lock and Dam Project, which is well into its fourth year of construction, should be completed around the first quarter of 2004. The Project, undertaken by the Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, and being constructed by J. A. Jones and Atkinson Constructors, features a unique gate system unlike any other currently in operation. In addition to its many one-of-a-kind features in both construction and function, the project is also of substantial benefit to Bolivar County. "The project employs around 300 craft people and 40 staff personnel, about half of whom live in Bolivar County," says Greg Herrick, Senior Engineer for J. A. Jones. Herrick, a resident of Cleveland himself, adds that many of the supplies, tools, and some building materials are purchased and ferried over from Janoush Landing, just north of Rosedale. For more information on this extraordinary project please visit the Corps of Engineers website: http://www.swl.usace.army.mil/projmgt/montpoint.html

Bolivar County towns recieve grant
Governor Ronnie Musgrove recently announced the latest round of economic development funds awarded through the Small Municipalities and Limited Population Counties Grant program. The forty-eight grants totaled $10,102,638. The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA), which administers the program, also approves the grant recipients. Bolivar County is among the recipients of these funds. The town of Gunnison is set to receive $180,400, and Alligator will follow with $46,332. "The State of Mississippi is striving to improve the quality of life for every citizen. Through the Small Municipalities and Limited Population Counties Grant program, we are helping communities build their capacity for growth and prosperity in the future," commented Governor Ronnie Musgrove.

The Warehouse set to open October 12th
Raymond Huerta, owner of Huerta Construction, and his brother-in-law, Scott Speakes, a professional photographer from Atlanta, GA, will issue in a new concept in antiques shopping on October 12th. The Warehouse, a 20,000 square foot facility built in 1902, will feature over 100 booths displaying unique items from around the world. "We want things that are unique to this area," says Speakes. In addition, The Warehouse will boast an art gallery for local and upcoming artists, a gourmet eatery called The Lunch Room offering soups, sandwiches, pizzas, coffees and desserts, and The Locker Room, a place for sports memorabilia and signed photos.

Baby Doll House in Benoit in need of help
The Burrus House, built in 1859-61 by John Crawford Burrus, is the only high-style antebellum house left in Bolivar County. The house is known by several different names including The Hollywood plantation and "The Baby Doll House." The name Hollywood Plantation originated from the many Holly trees surrounding the property; "The Baby Doll House" came from its use in the 1956 movie "Baby Doll", which is based on a Tennessee Williams short story. Ned Mitchell, a local businessman who maintains great interest in the house, says, "The house was restored around 1980, and several groups used it for parties." Despite the restoration effort, the Burrus House has once again succumbed to vacancy and time Mitchell says. "The house was added to the list of Mississippi's 10 most endangered historic places," he adds. Although several ideas have been proposed for the house, it still stands as a reminder of the past, hoping not to become a part of it.

South Park Studio and Gallery adds much to Merigold
South Park Studio and Gallery, located in Merigold next door to Crawdad's, brings the unique artistic talents of owner and artist Brandon McCranie to the mainstream. McCranie describes his sculptures as "folk art" and says they are comprised of both found and new objects, blending a variety of construction methods. Although he is probably best known for his fish sculptures, the subject matter of the work is as varied as the materials he says. McCranie also says he has done numerous commission pieces and welcomes requests. South Park Studio and Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00am-3:00pm and 6:00pm-9:00pm.
