Changing the Blues
Two meetings recently held at Delta State could help change the way the Delta blues are promoted. With representatives from throughout the blues community on hand, these meetings were geared to promote the Delta as a total region for the blues, placing the emphasis on the entire Delta, and less on individual communities. Steve Lavere, Curator of the Greenwood Blues Heritage Museum and Gallery, says, "One of the more important issues discussed was signage, the need for directional signs along highways and marking historically important Blues sites." The meetings also proposed a printed tour guide, a regional website, and a Mississippi feature in Living Blues Magazine.

Professor of Journalism
returns safely from Cuba
Warren Byrd, Professor of Journalism at Delta State, and Master Sergeant in the Army Reserve, recently returned to Cleveland after five months of service in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. While in Cuba, Byrd served as part of Joint Task Force 160 overseeing the detention facilities where the Al-Qaeda forces are being held. Byrd, in charge of media affairs, was responsible for getting the media to and from the base safely, as well as helping them get the story they sought, while also maintaining security. As a result of his experience there, Byrd will host a forum discussing the relationship between the military and the media on October 10.

Bean Counter
better than ever
The Bean Counter, which was located across from the DSU library, relocated to 219 S. Court Street in July of this year. Owner, Laura Lindner, says the shop simply outgrew its old location and expansion was necessary. Along with the change of location, Lindner made several other changes to her business. The coffee shop now features a selection of sandwiches and side salads as well as an expansion of the desert choices. In addition, Lindner says she has plans to feature live music on Thursday evenings. Lindner adds that her goal was to offer patrons a few more choices, while preserving the quaint coffee shop atmosphere customers have come to appreciate.

Grapeland Store set
to open November 1
Jonathan Vance, owner of Airport Grocery, is about to embark upon another business venture. The Grapeland Store, scheduled to open November 1, will be a shop where a variety of merchants can display their products. "The name came from an old store that once sat outside Benoit," explains Vance, "We even used a lot of the material from the old store for the new building." Antiques, gifts, pottery, and original artwork will be among the products displayed at the Grapeland Store. Grapeland Store is located on Highway 61 North, across from Baxter.
